9 Social Trends to Watch in 2017

Public Relations covers so many different bases. PR professionals have to constantly balance multiple different hats in order to keep a client, as well as the public, happy.

One of my favorite sides to PR is the social media side. With our ever-changing social media scene, there’s always something new to learn or a trend to follow, and 2017 will not shy away from that. So, if you’re like me, then these 9 social media trends (from communicator Arik Hanson) are going to be at the top of your list to keep an eye on:

  1. Less is the new more (less words, less often)
  2. The all-video newsfeed could be a reality (including gifs)
  3. Instagram will lose its “cool” factor (most people using it now, ads take away from the experience)
  4. Live videos will lead to deeper brand engagement (and more top-of-mind thoughts)
  5. The emoji heyday is over (most times, they don’t draw as much attention anymore)
  6. LinkedIn Publishing will help close the gap between employees and company leaders (it humanizes executives instead of just being the people lurking in the corner office)
  7. People will rely on third-party vendors to create podcasts (podcasts are gaining some momentum and take certain skill set most companies don’t have in-house)
  8. More Pinterest, less Snapchat (no solid metrics for Snapchat, and Pinterest offers direct links for better results)
  9. The year of the 360-degree photos (creates deeper user experience and almost like virtual reality, without all the equipment)
